There are 17 species of penguins, with the Emperor Penguin being the tallest at 1.1 meters tall. They have a blue-grey back and a white belly with a distinctive yellow tinge on it. Many penguins mate for life, but the Emperor Penguin is one of the few that doesn’t. They typically have one mate per year, but still, take a fatherly role with their offspring. They look after the newly laid eggs by standing over them, for up to two months, to keep them warm and protect them. During this time the males eat nothing.  Talk about dedicated babysitting!

Emperor Penguins have two layers of feathers on their legs so they don’t get too chilly in the -50°C of Antarctica.
